Oakridge inducts nine new members into National Math Honor Society

Home

Nine students at The Oakridge School are among the nation’s newest members of Mu Alpha Theta (ΜΑΘ), the national high school and two-year college mathematics honor society formed in 1957 at the University of Oklahoma. They are dedicated to inspiring a keen interest in mathematics, developing solid scholarships in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students. More than 100,000 students are Mu Alpha Theta members at more than 2,420 schools in the United States and 23 foreign countries.

The 2022-2023 inductees are:

Daivin Desai
Shavaughn Dunson
Hayden Fickel
Emma Foster
Aaron Jones
Nora Mooney
Audrey Pettigrew
Matthew Rogers
Megan Weldon

The Oakridge chapter of ΜΑΘ launched during the 2019-2020 school year when alumnus and past ΜΑΘ president Grant Miranda ‘22 saw a need for an organization that could help students at Oakridge. The 2022- 2023 ΜΑΘ presidents are Tyler Hall and Eshan Singhal. Upper School Math Teacher Mrs. Melanie Hartsell is the ΜΑΘ sponsor.

“I am proud to brag on the accomplishments of Mu Alpha Theta. Our chapter has become recognized with high esteem and admiration from their peers who have received tutoring help from their new alpha theta peer tutors,” said Mrs. Hartsell. “This is a win-win relationship. Every time we help a student, we also gain an understanding of the math concepts ourselves.”

Qualifications for high school chapter membership, in general, require a student to maintain at least a 3.0 math grade point average (GPA), and they must have completed two years of college preparatory mathematics (including Algebra and Geometry). In addition, the students must also have completed or enrolled in the third year of college preparatory mathematics.

Congratulations to all of the students, including ΜΑΘ officers:
