Dear Oakridge Family,
I had an entirely different message prepped for this week. It was one that I thought was inspiring and thought-provoking. It celebrated our students, talking of their many successes in the opening weeks of school and how great the first few weeks have felt. And then Wednesday came along…another senseless tragedy with young lives lost. Another event that simply didn’t need to happen. Frankly, I’m tired of writing these messages because we should not have to worry about whether or not our kids are going to a safe place to learn.
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you in the wake of the tragic school shooting that took place in Georgia. In moments like these, we are reminded of the profound importance of the safety and well-being of our children, schools, and communities.
We are more than just educators and learners—we are a community. As a community, it is crucial that we come together in times of uncertainty to support one another and ensure that we remain a place of safety, care, and compassion for all.
While our hearts ache for those in Georgia, this tragedy also prompts us to reflect on the measures we take daily to protect our students, staff, and families. We remain committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for everyone on our campus. Our safety protocols are continuously evaluated and enhanced, and we will always work tirelessly to ensure the security of our Oakridge family.
But just as important as physical safety is emotional and psychological support. I encourage you to talk openly with your children about their feelings, and we are here to offer guidance and support through our counseling. These events can be deeply unsettling, and it is essential that we create spaces for our students to express their emotions and feel supported by the caring adults around them.
As we navigate this difficult time together, let us reaffirm our commitment to kindness, compassion, and understanding within our school community. We must continue to nurture an environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued, and where we stand united in our mission to protect and uplift one another.
In moments like this, it is more important than ever to remember that we are not alone. We are part of a community that values one another deeply, and together, we will continue to care for and protect the most precious part of our world—our children.
Thank you for your unwavering support and for being an integral part of The Oakridge School family.
With heartfelt sympathy and unity,
Matt Burgy
Head of School
