Dear Oakridge Community,
Many of you know that I am an avid reader. In particular, I love reading books that help me become a better leader. Right now (in the midst of also reading a riveting biography of James K. Polk, more on that in another letter), I am reading Inner Excellence, by Jim Murphy. The core of my own educational leadership philosophy is that there is an excellence in every child, and it is our job as educators to help our children realize what that is, and help them to actualize it. The principles of Inner Excellence by Jim Murphy challenge us to approach life with clarity, purpose, and courage. At its core, Inner Excellence teaches us that greatness is not achieved through perfection but through a commitment to growth and a deep understanding of our values.
At Oakridge, we see this truth reflected every day in the lives of our students, faculty, and families. Our mission is not merely to educate but to inspire—to help each individual uncover their unique potential and pursue it with passion and perseverance. This work demands more than just skill; it requires heart, resilience, and a willingness to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.
Murphy writes, “Your best performance comes when you’re free—free to be yourself, free to pursue your purpose.” This resonates deeply with our vision for the Oakridge experience. Here, we strive to create a community where every student feels empowered to be their authentic self, where curiosity is nurtured, and where the pursuit of excellence is fueled by joy and a sense of belonging.
To our students: Remember that your journey is uniquely yours. Embrace the struggles as well as the triumphs, for it is through both that you grow into the extraordinary individuals you are meant to be.
To our parents: Thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education and partnering with us to create a culture that values character as much as achievement. Your support and engagement are vital to our success.
To our faculty and staff: You are the heart of this school. Your unwavering dedication to our mission and to the well-being of our students inspires us all. You embody the essence of Inner Excellence every day.
As we look ahead, let us commit to living with intention, to fostering an environment where challenges are met with courage, and to inspiring one another to be our best selves. Together, we can continue to cultivate a community that reflects the values and aspirations of Inner Excellence.
