Matt Burgy, Head of School

November 10, 2023

Dear Oakridge Family,

My name is Leighton Meitl, and I am in the 3rd Grade! I have been at Oakridge since the 1st grade. I love it here because I have found so many great friends! A few months ago, I came to Mr. Burgy to ask him a question: “Can I help coordinate a service project that I love?” I prepared a presentation for him, and he enthusiastically encouraged me to move forward. The project that I am passionate about is “Meals of Hope.” Because I am able to have a warm meal each night, I thought it would be great if we could help others less fortunate to have the same.

Something that I love about Oakridge is that learning is about more than what takes place in the classroom. It is also about leading across campus and in our community. Students make a positive difference daily through numerous programs and opportunities to serve.

I got the idea working with my Girl Scout troop and wanted to expand it to Oakridge. I learned that 17% of those in the DFW area live below the poverty line and the holidays are often the toughest time for them. Sometimes access to simple family meals can make all the difference. I am excited to lead this project, and I hope that you are willing to participate in it as well.

The event will take place on Saturday, December 9, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the MAC. During the event, volunteers will pack meals in a team concentrated effort, and if I meet my fundraising goal, we will collectively pack 50,000 meals that will be donated to local food banks.

This project is backed by a non-profit called Meals of Hope, and is a volunteer opportunity for the whole family! Regardless of age, I hope you can come help us to serve a greater need.

I have created a video that explains this project in greater detail, which can be found here. To sign up to volunteer, click here. To donate and support this effort, click here. I know this project will add to the Oakridge tradition of coming together to support those in need!

With Gratitude,
