Matt Burgy, Head of School

Dear Oakridge Family,

They sometimes say imitation is the highest form of flattery. I tried to take that to heart this week when a Kindergarten student told me, "Look, Mr. Burgy, I'm dressed up just like you," as they celebrated 100 days of school at the Early Childhood Center. This young guy had a cane, round-rimmed glasses, and dressed to look like a man well over the age of 100. Clearly, when our youngest Owls see me, they see a different version of me than I see in myself in the mirror in the morning!

While I say this in jest, it made me consider the importance of emulation in our students' educational experience and the responsibility we hold as educators in the development of our children. It also reminded me that what we say and do as educators are under constant scrutiny. Because we have all been to school in some form or fashion, we have a paradigm of our educational journey. We expect our children to emulate our experience. Still, we forget; however, the lens we see through in our educational understanding has changed dramatically from when we were in school.

As educators, we sometimes fall into the trap of "I have taught kids this way for years, and it worked then…it should work now." The reality is that it does for some and doesn't for others. Our constantly changing and evolving world has taught us that the skills that we want our children to have in creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and citizenship skills need to be emulated daily. I am proud to work with a group of educators who believe this is true and work tirelessly to hone their craft.

I hope you all have a wonderful 3-day weekend, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the Super Supper and Auction next Saturday!

Warmly,

Matt Burgy

Head of School
