Tamika Dees, Head of Middle School

November 17, 2023

Greetings, Middle School Families,

This week, the Middle School was filled with kindness, generosity and thanksgiving. We concluded our Annual Canned Food Drive by collecting a total of 891 cans. The students were not only excited to participate in a little friendly competition, but more importantly an opportunity to serve and to give back. Congratulations to Mrs. Grabowski, Mrs. Roe, and Mr. Henderson’s advisory class for collecting the most cans.

The 5th grade students completed a “Kindness” writing project illustrating how they can make the world a better place through acts of generosity, hospitality, compassion, and thoughtfulness. The students incorporated similes and metaphors in their artistic pieces of writing. These beautiful displays can be seen throughout the Middle School and serve as a reminder of the importance of being a bucket filler. Our Upper House students also engaged in the celebration of “Thanksgiving” by completing an activity, in which they tracked random acts of kindness in an effort to make kindness the norm.

On Thursday, November 15, the 7th graders had an opportunity to visit the American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum. Students learned about different careers, the parts of an  aircraft, and some of the brave men and women who have utilized their skills in the field of aviation to keep our country safe. Students experienced the sights-and-sounds, hands-on world of flight through different exhibits, which included artifacts, aircraft engines, and navigating an airplane through a flight simulator.

Finally, the highlight of our week was spending time on campus with our Grandparents and Grandfriends. This annual occasion was an opportunity for us to showcase all of the amazing things that are happening in Middle School, and to show our appreciation for those who mean so much to us. Activities included stained glass window service projects, generation gap kahoot, French Monopoly, Spanish Scrabble, and tabletop bowling.

Please come out and join us from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 20 for the Turkey Toss at Mission Arlington.  Our service is to remove the frozen turkeys from the walk-in freezers and begin the thawing process so they are ready for Thanksgiving Day. Families, friends, alumni, and students of all ages are welcome, and don’t forget to bring some gloves and a jacket.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Tamika R. Dees
