Tamika Dees, Head of Middle School
September 8, 2023
Greetings, Middle School Families,
September is filled with opportunities for our Middle School scholars to explore study habits, implement test-taking strategies, try new things, and utilize different learning modalities. During this adolescent period, we understand that the brain is resilient, which makes this an ideal time for establishing a “solid” learning path for the remainder of their academic career. Therefore, one of our goals in Middle School is to implement instructional strategies that enhance abstract thinking, reasoning skills, and creativity. We have enjoyed watching your students work in collaborative groups during the advisory period and utilize different resources to solve complex problems.
However, not only are we creating a challenging academic environment for our students, but also a safe space for them to develop emotionally. During Owl Council, we encourage students to take risks, learn from their mistakes, and hold themselves accountable for their actions. We encourage them to engage in healthy peer conflict resolutions and mediation strategies.
Some tips on how parents may engage in this learning and growth process at home may include:
(1) During the week, ask your child what they may be learning in class and how this may apply to the real world.
(2) Encourage your child to review/study their notes for 10-15 minutes a day.
(3) Develop routines/procedures to help your child with organization.
(4) Inspire perseverance.
(5) Include your child when making family decisions.
Please be on the lookout for communication regarding the first progress report, which will be posted on September 15. You can assess your child’s grades by logging into MyBackPack. In addition, students will be taking the English and math ERB assessments on September 19 and 20. These assessments will serve as benchmarks and provide data to help teachers make informed decisions on addressing content and academic gaps.
We know that this time during your child’s growth and development can be exciting yet challenging. The Middle School Team is here to provide support and the necessary resources as each child navigates through this dynamic period in their lives.
Warmly,
Tamika Dees
