Tamika Dees, Head of Middle School
April 12, 2024
Greetings, Middle School Parents,
We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse with our Middle School scholars. The students were beaming with excitement and enthusiasm as they were able to view “the path of totality,” something that will not happen again for another 20-plus years. And the best part of it all was sharing this experience with family, alums, faculty, and staff which was absolutely priceless.
Our 7th and 8th grade choir students have been working hard all year to learn the mechanics of performing and being a choir; working together, being accountable to each other, trusting each other, and making beautiful sounds. Next Friday, April 19th, that hard work comes to fruition as they travel to TPSMEA Concert and Sight Reading Contest. The 35 member choir will sing three prepared pieces from memory and be adjudicated on their preparation and musicianship. Afterwards they will be handed a brand new piece of music and are given six minutes to learn it without singing a note. It’s a daunting task and a difficult skill to master but our singers are ready. Best of luck to this talented group of Owls!
This week the students in the 5th grade science classes also explored Newton’s Third Law of Motion, for every force in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction, along with observing different forces at work. The students recorded data that was used to calculate their average speed on a teacher-made hovercraft. The students compared their results with their classmates and had fun while making memories.
Finally, our Middle School scholars helped to raise $50,000 for the Oakridge Fun Run and Color Run. The students enjoyed their first two incentives this week by wearing silly socks on Wednesday and their favorite hat on Friday. Again, thank you to the OPC, volunteers, and donors for helping to make this event a tremendous success.
