Greetings, MS Families, 

We were out of this world and reaching for the stars in Middle School this week. Our Middle School scholars in the 6th grade math classes participated in a Constellation Project. The students researched the constellation’s story and determined whether the constellation was Greek or a Zodiac. Then, the students found the distance from Earth to the central star in their constellation and represented this number in scientific notation, light years, and miles. The students worked in groups to design a tri-fold and then evaluated their work using a rubric. Finally, the students designed their own constellation and created a story about its origin, the number of stars, and the pattern the stars made. 

The students went on a field trip to the UTA Planetarium on Wednesday. The students completed a scavenger hunt, visited the Maker Space Lab, and watched a film titled “Beyond the Sun.” As we prepare for the rare occurrence of a total Solar Eclipse on April 8th, we believe that middle school is an opportunity for students to connect what they learn in the classroom to the real world. A place where school is more than information outlined in a textbook, but a true experience.
