Greetings, Middle School Families,
In the Middle School at Oakridge, we are committed to providing ample opportunities and spaces for students to develop leadership skills. We believe that student leadership fosters self-confidence, collaboration, and decision-making abilities. As our middle school scholars operate in these leadership roles, students not only gain a sense of purpose, but also acquire interpersonal skills such as empathy, active listening, and conflict resolution.
This week in Middle School we have enjoyed watching our Student Council in action. The student advisory board is composed of student representatives in grades 5-8. The purpose of the Student Council is to serve as representatives, leaders, and role models for the entire student body. The Student Council is also responsible for planning and carrying out special activities throughout the year. In addition, the student leadership team serves as a communication link between the students in each advisory, the administration, and the faculty. This year the Student Council has hosted a number of events which include a kickball game, movie day, winter dance, and Nuk‘em tournament.
Allowing students to actively lead and help organize school events gives them a voice and a feeling of empowerment. Our hope is that as we continue to lay the foundation where leadership skills are being valued and taught, will serve as a catalyst to the development of future leaders who will make a positive impact in their communities and ultimately the world. We truly believe that student leadership is a vital component of a balanced education and endeavor to fulfill this mission.
With profound gratitude,
Tamika R. Dees
