Tamika Dees, Head of Middle School
February 16, 2024
Greetings, Middle School Families,
During February, our middle school students had the opportunity to learn about different cultures and traditions. As educators of adolescents, we aim to build a framework that hinges on building mutual respect and social responsibility. We believe that The Oakridge School strives to inspire academic excellence within a genuine and diverse community to prepare our students for the world in which they live.
As we celebrate Black History Month and Lunar New Year, I thought it would be exciting to hear what the term "culture" means to our students, and below are a few of their responses.
"Culture describes how people live their lives and interact with each other." - Adam Soldati, 8th grade.
"Culture means that you respect your traditions." - Sanya Singh, 6th grade.
"Culture is being with family and friends, celebrating what you believe in. It could be believing in some religion or just a belief that you have. Culture is mostly celebrating with family and having fun." - Lea Martel, 6th grade.
"Culture is community and an event you celebrate with people you know or grew up with. Culture includes all the food and different clothing styles." - Chloe Eden, 8th grade.
"Culture is the practices and beliefs of groups of people and families." - MJ Singleton, 8th grade.
Throughout the school year, we would love to partner with our families and the Oakridge community, and invite you to come out and share your rich traditions, history, and culture with our students. At Oakridge, we are family and believe that we are better together.
With profound gratitude,
Tamika R. Dees
