Tamika Dees, Head of Middle School
February 9, 2024
Bonjour, Middle School Families,
In Middle School we are firm believers in experiential learning. True learning happens not only in the classroom but should be relevant to real-world experiences. According to the Center for Teaching and Learning, experiential learning is the process by which students learn by doing and then have an opportunity to reflect on how their learning in the classroom applies to the real world.
In Dr. Frasier's French class, the students have been practicing ordering food from cafes and restaurants in French. Some examples of the phrases that the students have learned are "Je voudrais une omelet" which means "I would like an omelet" in English, and "Je bois un café au lait" which translates to "I am drinking a coffee with cream." As the grand finale for this unit, students transformed their classroom into a French restaurant, bringing in all types of food, such as croissants, baguettes, and macarons. The students also practiced vocabulary relating to food and fine dining. Bon appetit!
In Mrs. Roe's 6th grade math classes, students created math games to teach kindergarten students the following concepts: counting to 50, skip counting, and the names of numbers. The students worked in groups of 3 and researched different types of games for children ages 3-5. Once their games were completed with a set of directions, the students traveled to the ECC and enjoyed playing their custom-designed games with our kindergarten friends. Students learned the value of teamwork and collaboration during this design-thinking process.
Congratulations to fifth grader Mantaaj Sandhu, our first place Oakridge Spelling Bee winner, for making Oakridge proud in the Area Spelling Bee on Tuesday.
