May 19, 2023

As we celebrated the Oakridge Seniors at graduation last Saturday, the reality of the end-of-the school year quickly came into focus. To put this into perspective, we have six more sleeps before the last exam. For students, that means six more sleeps before the beginning of summer! That is not a long time… we are almost there.

Like I have for much of the year, I have enjoyed the brilliant moments of our students. This week we have celebrated academic success together, eaten lunch together (8th grade), and watched the 8th grade students “play” one more time at recess (with water guns and a water slide) before they transition to the Upper School. And, in four brief years, these 8th graders, too, will walk across the stage and graduate. I hope all parents can take a moment this week to enjoy just a little part of this process because Middle School only happens once.

Please enjoy a peek into the Science labs….  Ms. Eggleson’s Physical Science Bottle Lab and Mr. Pham’s Life Science Frog Dissection Lab.

1. Semester Exams are coming up next week. What does the schedule look like for Middle School?

Exams will begin at 8:30am. Beginning at 7:45am-8:15am, students may arrive and report to that day’s testing classroom based on class period (see schedule below). A snack will be provided by the OPC on days that students have two exams. As for dress code next week, Monday is the final Boosterthon non-uniform dress reward day. For the rest of the week (Tuesday-Thursday), students need to be in regular school uniform.

There are no classes next week, only exam sessions. Students in Middle School will take one or two exams a day on Monday (5/22) through Thursday (5/25). Friday (5/26) is reserved as a make-up testing day. Students do not need to come to school on Friday (5/26) if they have completed all of their exams.

When a student only has one exam, dismissal will be at 10:00am. On days with two exams, students will dismiss at 12:00pm. Clayton Child Care is available for 5th and 6th grade students if extended care is needed. If you plan on using Clayton, please register. The library will not be available after-school during exam week. Unless riding the bus, students are expected to be picked up at the conclusion of their last exam each day.

2. When is the iPad collection for eighth graders and students that will not be returning next year?

School-issued iPads, Apple power adapters, and USB-C charge cables will be collected from all students in grade 8 and any non-returning or non-enrolled students during the week of May 22-26, 2023. Please be certain your child brings all of these items with them each day during that week and will be collected following your child’s last exam. The technology team will collect all of the items, photograph any damage(s), and notify parents regarding missing or damaged items by Friday, June 16, 2023. Payment for damaged or missing items will need to be paid online via My Backpack. Please reference the list below for fees. If you have questions, email technology@theoakridgeschool.org

  • Physical damage: $50 (This includes obvious damage to the screen and hairline cracks hidden near the edges of the iPad or hidden by the screen protector or case edges. This also includes water damage, and damage to the charging port, headphone jack, or buttons.)

  • Missing/damaged Apple USB-C charge cable: $20

  • Missing/damaged Apple power adapter: $20

  • Missing iPad: $408

3.  As the school year wraps up, is there a way to sell back our used textbooks?

Yes, this flyer will give you instructions on how to sell back your textbooks.

4. Is there a free sports physical clinic for next year’s 7th and 8th graders?

Yes, Oakridge will once again be participating in the AOA Sports Physical Event on June 3rd from 9 am-10 am. This event will be free of charge for all participating student-athletes. We ask that each student-athlete please bring the necessary physical forms filled out prior to being seen by our physicians. This way it expedites the process and we are able to get the student-athletes moved through each examination quickly. The Cody Stephens Foundation will also be offering free heart screenings.

Oakridge School's Time Slot- 9:00 am -10:00 am

As always, please email me if you have additional questions.

Kind regards,

Britt
