January 13, 2023

Dear Middle School Parents,

As we all know, this week started with a tough TCU loss to Georgia (really, not even a close game). Regardless of whether you support the Purple or not, reflecting on the amazing season the Frogs had this year, I am reminded of some important life lessons that may be applicable to education and our students. First of all, the process is way more important than the product. All season long, the Frogs continued to find creative ways to win (sometimes late into the 4th quarter). Sometimes it didn’t look pretty, but they remained true to their process and learned a little about themselves as a team. Second, their ability to adapt to new situations, specifically a coaching change, and still find success without excuses. Wow, Sonny Dykes and the players found amazing chemistry in a hurry and didn’t use an excuse of change to derail their goals. I can’t count how many times a day students and teachers need to find ways to adapt to change. Finally, even at the player level, I think there are lessons to learn. TCU quarterback, Max Duggan, showed grit, determination, and perseverance in losing his starting position this year to start the season. Yet, what an inspiration for his team, as he eventually led them to the championship game and was named a Heisman runner-up. He refused to give up. Whether it’s sports, the classroom, or other areas of life, please continue to encourage your child to look for the positive, focus on the process, adapt to change, and stay strong in adversity.

Each week, I include questions that have been asked, or that may be helpful to you in our weekly communication. In addition, if you have a question that you feel might be helpful for other parents in the Middle School that you would like considered for our weekly communication, please email your questions to me at brobinson@theoakridgeschool.

1. Are there any activities going on at school to honor MLK, Jr. Day?

We are excited to have motivational speaker, Mike Satterfield, speak to the Middle School. Mike has memorized Mr. King’s “I have a Dream Speech” and passionately recites it for the students and discusses why he learned the speech in his youth, and talks about the history of King’s legacy. During advisory, Mr. Satterfield will speak to students on Tuesday, January 17.

2. What is the conduct grade on the report card or progress reports? What does it mean if my child gets an “N?”

The conduct grades indicate that either classroom behavior and/or study habits are Satisfactory (S), Needs Improvement (N), or Unsatisfactory (U). For example, if a student turns in multiple late assignments, a student’s conduct grade may be lowered to Needs Improvement (N) or Unsatisfactory (U). A final conduct grade of (N) or (U) on the report card at the end of the marking period will prevent a student from being on the Honor Roll or Head of School list. Simply put, a grade of an (N) or (U) indicates that adjustments are required with behavior or study habits.

3.Will my Eighth Grader have the opportunity to learn more about the Upper School before next year?

The first step in their Upper School journey will be the Eighth to Ninth Grade Move-up Social on Monday, January 23, from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm. Please save the date. Historically, move-up socials have been come-and-go events that allow families to meet the faculty and administration for the next division in a setting conducive to an informal conversation without a formal presentation. For the move-up to Upper School, both parents and students are invited to attend. To RSVP, please email Mrs. Wetzel

4. When is the STEM Showcase? Can I attend as a parent?

Please join us on January 27, 2023 for the Bright Minds Bright Ideas STEM Showcase. This come and go event will run from 8-9:30 a.m. in the Student Activity Center (SAC). Parents are welcome to attend.

5. Friday, January 27, is a Last Friday early dismissal. What is going on that day?

There is always lots going on Last Fridays. It will be early dismissal at 11:45 am for Middle School. All students are encouraged to wear a college shirt or sweatshirt. Some of the activities on campus will include Stem Showcase, collage activities for 8th grade in the Upper School, and Student Council-led activities for grades 5, 6, and 7.

As always, please email me if you have additional questions.

Kind regards,

Britt
