Sarah Schecter, Head of Lower School

August 11, 2023

Dear Lower School Parents,

Greetings from Lower School. I hope you are enjoying fun and relaxing days with your sweet children. My favorite summer memory was riding horses in Monument Valley under wide blue skies. After four hours, I realized being a cowgirl is for the limber and young.

It is nice to have a break from school routines, but we are eager and excited to begin our new school year Wednesday, August 23. A couple of other important dates are the Back to School Bash on Saturday, August 19, and Parent Information Night on the second day of school, Thursday, August 24. Attending these two events gets your family’s school year off to a great start.

Three Lower School colleagues have moved to new responsibilities across campus. Ms. Benjamin has moved to the admissions office, Mrs. Wall will be teaching kindergarten, and Mrs. White will be working full time as our Technology Database Manager. We will miss them, but we look forward to hearing of their successes in their new posts. We also welcome Coach Ivo from the ECC to our Lower School PE team.

We are happy to announce Mary Mills and Dawn Harris will be teaching second grade. Mrs. Mills has 16 years of teaching experience, most recently at Highland Park ISD in Dallas. She has a Master’s degree from Lamar University. Mrs. Harris is familiar to many of you because she has worked as a substitute for us. She has six years of teaching experience and has a Master’s degree from UTA. Finally, we are thankful that one of our parents, Sarah Waldo, will take Mrs. White’s position of Lower School Aide. Mrs. Waldo has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois-Springfield. We are happy to welcome these three wonderful additions to the Oakridge family.

Most of you ordered school supplies from the Oakridge Parent Club. If you did not, please bring supplies to the Back to School Bash, August 19. That will make the first day of school a bit easier.

As you are buying backpacks, water bottles, and uniforms, please remember to label them. When they are misplaced, they are more likely to find their way home. In case Dri-fit is a preferred option for your child, you may now purchase “Poly-wicking” fabric at Mills Uniforms in Fort Worth.

Next Wednesday afternoon, August 16, you will receive an email from your child’s homeroom teacher for this year. We know you are all looking forward to hearing this news!

A note regarding carpool for those who have more than one child in Lower School. Older siblings will go to afternoon carpool with their younger siblings, so parents only have one place to pick up each day. Also, Clayton Youth Enrichment will be back this year for those who need extended day childcare.

Enjoy your last days of summer. See you soon, stay cool.
