Dear Families,

Each week, ECC students begin their day with morning announcements. This is a time for students to come together as a community and learn important skills. We start each morning by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the national anthem. This helps students to develop a sense of patriotism and respect for our country. We focus on a different "Thought of the Week." This could be a character trait, such as kindness or respect, or a skill, such as how to be a good friend. We display the Thought of the Week prominently in our classroom and spend the week practicing it with actions and words. “We treat others the way we want to be treated,” was our thought of the week. We discussed how we can include our friends and treat others with respect through our words and actions . We hope that by focusing on the Thought of the Week, our students will develop important character traits and skills that will help them succeed in school and life.

Books that support being a good friend:

  • Peanut Butter and Cupcake by Terri Border
  • Can I Play Too? by Mo Willems
  • Stick and Stone by Beth Ferry
  • Be a Friend by Salina Yoon

Cheer on the Owls: Friday Night Lights are not just for Upper School students and families. It is when our school community comes together to have a blast, cheer on the Oakridge Owls, and hang out with other families. In the fall, the Owls play football, field hockey, volleyball, and run cross country. Come on down to our home games and let's fill those stands! Check out the flyer below for game times and themes for the football games. Remember to dress up according to the theme and cheer on the Varsity Owls Football Team!

Communication: We recognize that joining a new community can sometimes be overwhelming. To help ease the transition, please be sure that you are reading the weekly emails, checking Seesaw regularly, signed up for Remind alerts, and reading the whiteboard outside of the ECC. These avenues are great places to stay in touch with “all things ECC.”

1st Wednesdays: I hope to see many of you next week on Wednesday, September 4, at our first monthly “1st Wednesday” meeting. During these meetings, we will review and discuss the ECC calendar, hear from Mrs. Novo (school counselor) and discuss parent education tips. This is another great way to get to know the school, our programs and how you can get involved.

Thank you, families, for a wonderful first full week of school. Your children are adjusting well and loving their new family. Enjoy your three-day weekend.

Best regards,

Ashley Read, Oakridge Class of 2005
