Dr. Sarah Schecter, Head of Lower School

December 19, 2025

Dear Lower School Parents,

We had a festive week of free dress days, holiday crafts, our musical theater presentation, class parties, plus all the regular activities. It was busy and fun. Now they are all yours for a couple of weeks, so enjoy the extra time and make the most of it.

Most years The Oakridge School holds a canned food drive around Thanksgiving and a coat drive in January. This year our Upper School Student Council contacted Mission Arlington to find out how we could be most helpful. The result is the Comfort and Care Drive that started last week and continues until January 9.

Mission Arlington has a need for these specific items:

  • Gently used or new coats
  • Dry cereal
  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly
  • Boxed meals (e.g. Hamburger Helper)
  • Diapers (size 4, 5, 6 and 7)

So far, Lower School has collected one very large box of Chex cereal. Hopefully, we can add quite a bit to this before January 9. I will send a text a few days before we return to school to remind everyone of the specifics of the Comfort and Care Drive.

We return to school on Wednesday, January 7. January 9 is Preview Day in Lower School. On this special day, all of our students get a sneak peek at the next grade level. If possible, please avoid appointments or missing school on Friday, January 9 from 8:15 – 9:15 a.m. We want everyone to enjoy this unique experience!

As we begin the new semester and head into cooler weather, here are a couple reminders about our Lower School Dress Code:

  • Blue or white tights or socks may be worn under skirts
  • All clothing worn in class must be purchased from the school’s approved uniform vendor or the Owl’s Landing Spirit Store (sweatshirts, fleece zip ups, sweaters, sweater vests)

All special content teachers, aides, assistants, and all of us who serve students, but do not have a homeroom class, were so surprised and happy to have such a generous gift bag from Lower School parents. Since we do not know exactly who to thank, we wanted to let all of you know your kindness is greatly appreciated. Your gifts were both thoughtful and generous. Thank you!

I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season. See you soon.

Happy Holidays,

Sarah Schecter
