Dear Oakridge Family,

At the heart of everything we do is a guiding promise—our mission statement. It is the compass that directs our decisions:

The Oakridge School is a college preparatory school that inspires our students to seek their potential through academic excellence, enriched by the arts and athletics. Our community nurtures and challenges each student on their unique journey while fostering character, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

We often speak of "academic excellence." However, in a high-achieving environment, it is easy to conflate excellence with perfection. It is vital that we distinguish between the two, as they lead our students down very different paths. Perfection suggests a single, flawless destination—a binary test where one either succeeds without error or fails. Excellence, by contrast, is exactly what our mission describes: a journey.

When we shift our focus from perfection to excellence, we fundamentally change how we view a student's potential—not just in their grades, but in their behavior and in their choices. Perfectionism demands that a student never make a social misstep, never have a bad day, and never have a lapse in judgment. This unrealistic standard often leads to anxiety or hidden mistakes. Excellence, however, accepts that part of growing up involves learning how to navigate complex social dynamics and taking responsibility for one’s actions, apologizing for those actions, and setting a course for fixing those actions in the future.

We see this distinction play out in our hallways and in the lunchroom just as much as in our classrooms. A perfectionist mindset fears that an apology is an admission of weakness. An excellence mindset understands that owning a mistake, apologizing sincerely to a peer, and changing behavior is the ultimate sign of maturity and integrity. When we nurture character, we aren't looking for students who never mess up; we are looking for students who know how to make things right when they do.

Whether it is recovering from a poor summative grade or navigating a disagreement with a friend, the goal remains the same. If we demand perfection, challenges become threats to a student’s identity. But when we prioritize excellence, those same moments become opportunities for growth. This perspective allows us to truly nurture and challenge our students simultaneously; we hold them to high standards of conduct and scholarship while providing the safety they need to stumble, recover, and build true resilience.

Ultimately, perfection demands that everyone look and act the same, whereas excellence honors the unique journey of every child. By valuing growth over grades and restoration over concealment, we ensure our students leave Oakridge not just with a great education, but with the character and confidence to navigate an imperfect world with a lifelong love of learning.

Warmly,

Matt Burgy
