Dear Oakridge Family,
At the heart of our mission, we identify as a college preparatory school. Often, we view "preparation" as a final destination—a box to check or a gate to pass through on the way to a college campus. But if we look closer at our daily life here at Oakridge, we see that preparation is so much more than a means to an end; it is the very essence of the unique journey each of our students is walking right now.
I felt this most clearly while attending our Softball Senior Night this week. Watching our seniors, it was evident that their journeys have been anything but a straight line. As they spoke, each in their own way, they shared how the winding road of their education has shaped them. They reminded us that true preparation isn't about perfectly predicting the future; it’s about building the character and the confidence to handle whatever that future holds, even as the world becomes increasingly complex for our children every day.
Our students are doing so much more than just mastering skills and absorbing content. They are learning the profound art of "showing up" for their school, for their teammates, and most importantly, for themselves. In this light, preparation becomes the ultimate form of self-respect. It is that quiet, diligent work done behind the scenes that eventually allows a student’s potential to meet its greatest opportunity.
What I continue to learn from listening to our students is just how distinct every path truly is. Whether a student finds their spark in the lab, the studio, or in a leadership role, we are fostering a lifelong love of learning that prepares them for a life of adaptability. We see this discipline grow in the classroom as they learn to think critically, and we see it on the stage and on the field as they build the resilience to perform under pressure. Ultimately, it all weaves together to form a character defined by the integrity to lead others with empathy.
We don’t just nurture; we challenge. We understand that a "unique journey" is often unpredictable, so we strive to provide our students with a compass rather than just a map. When they are truly prepared, they don’t have to fear the unknown; they can embrace it. As this school year comes to a close, let’s celebrate the process and, most importantly, let’s trust it. Thank you for being a part of this community that empowers our students to own their journeys, one prepared step at a time.
Warmly,
Matt Burgy
