Dear Oakridge Families,

It has been a heavy past few days here at The Oakridge School. The loss of Coach King affects the entire Oakridge Community, and we recognize that many students, staff, and families may be experiencing a span of emotions as they process the news.

During this difficult time, we want to assure you that support is available on campus. Myself, and my counseling intern, Meagan Solby, are available to meet with students individually or in small groups within the coming weeks. We encourage you to reach out if you would like your child to talk to one of us or you notice your child might be struggling. Everyone deals with grief in a different way and you may notice behavioral changes, amplified emotional responses, ongoing feelings of sadness, and increased worry or fear. Children might revisit these responses or have questions about death as they continue to process this loss. This is all a normal reaction to grief and your child will be okay with your support.

I recognize that talking with your child about death may be uncomfortable and leave you with questions. Below, you will find several resources for you to refer to if you have questions or need guidance on the best way to speak with your child.

Our Oakridge community is strong, and we will continue to support one another as we honor our colleague’s memory. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly if your child needs additional support or if you have any concerns.

Thanks for your caring and support during this difficult time for our community.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Novoselsky

Hello Oakridge Families and Staff,

My name is Meagan Solby, and I am a third-year graduate student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Texas Christian University. I also earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Child Development from TCU—so I am a proud Horned Frog fan!

My training has prepared me to support children, adolescents, adults, and families, and I counsel from a solution-focused, person-centered approach. As a counselor intern, my goal is to be a safe and supportive presence for students as they work through challenges. I hope to empower students to recognize their strengths and resources while developing strategies to solve problems and grow.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with loved ones, staying active, and cheering on the Horned Frogs at their sporting events. I am truly excited to meet and support the wonderful students and families of The Oakridge School this year!

You can reach me at counselingintern@theoakridgeschool.org. I look forward to a great year together!

Thank you!
Meagan Solby

Helpful Resources

Counseling at The Oakridge School

The Oakridge School prioritizes the social-emotional well-being of our students. During the school day, our counselor(s) and support staff are readily available to offer guidance and assistance in navigating emotional or social challenges that students may encounter. We foster a caring and compassionate environment that promotes a sense of belonging and self-confidence. Specifically, the school counselor serves the school community by addressing the psychological, social, and emotional health of students in the Early Childhood Center through the Upper School.

The counselor is available to meet with individual students and works with students in small group or class settings throughout the school year. Additionally, the counselor is a resource for parents through individual appointments or general informational presentations.
