April 1, 2020
Dear Oakridge Families,
Greetings. As you know, on Sunday, President Trump extended the nation's social distancing guidelines through April 30. Yesterday, Governor Abbott declared that Texas school campuses should remain closed until Monday, May 4. To honor this and to keep the Oakridge community as safe as possible, distance learning will continue through at least Friday, May 1.
On a Zoom conference with dozens of school heads yesterday, a venerable leadership expert shared advice for leading through uncertainty. Upon reflection, it occurred to me that his wisdom is applicable to all adults - parents, grandparents, teachers, counselors, and administrators – living and working beside children in 2020. He encouraged us to lead courageously, candidly, clearly, and empathetically…while simultaneously maintaining the human connections that differentiate us from other schools. Our team is committed to leading in this manner.
In this era, schools, businesses, and households across the nation have more questions than answers. The Oakridge School is not immune to this dilemma, which I realize can be frustrating.
What We Do NOT Know:
1. Why the COVID-19 pandemic is happening now 2. When the crisis will peak and end 3. Whether the Coronavirus will recur 4. How this experience will change us or when life will return to normal 5. What challenges are affecting our neighbors
1. Every Oakridge household is facing this battle 2. Owls are resilient, but some may be nervous or fearful 3. We place the highest priority on people, not programs 4. We value kindness, understanding, and empathy 5. This, too, shall pass
I understand many of you have late spring and summer events on your mind – prom, graduation, summer camp, and other planned activities. All of these things will be addressed in the near future. Thank you for your patience.
Your divisional leaders will be emailing you later today. If you need anything from the school as we continue to partner with you through distance learning, please reach out to anyone on our team.
Sincerely, Jon Kellam ©2016 The Oakridge School |
