Elementary school children coloring in a group

The Oakridge Early Childhood Center provides a developmentally appropriate program for young children. Preschool classes meet 3 or 5 days a week from 8:15 a.m. to 12 noon or 8:15 a.m. to 2:30p.m. Pre-kindergarten classes meet 5 days a week from 8:15 a.m. to 12 noon or 8:15 a.m. to 2:30p.m. The kindergarten program is from 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. There are 12 children in each Preschool (ages 3 and 4) class, 14 in each Pre-kindergarten (ages 4 and 5) class and 15 in each kindergarten (ages 5 and 6) class.

The Early Childhood Center curriculum incorporates Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Perceptual-Motor activities, Music, Spanish, Art and Physical Education. Students have opportunities for computer time in the classroom. Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten students participate in field trips related to their curriculum; while Preschool classes have special visitors bring programs to their classrooms. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes visit our library once a week to hear a story and check out books. Preschool students have scheduled library times throughout the year.

The program provides opportunities for nurturing self-esteem and independence. The Oakridge Early Childhood Center is a place where learning is fun!

Our educational philosophy is traditional. We introduce children to concepts appropriate for their age level and life experience. We use discovery and engage students in experiential learning. We believe that children have a right to be children! We believe that children have a right to time; especially quality time with adults. Children have a right to err. These moments enable a teacher or adult to seize a "teachable moment". We look for positive aspects in children trying to affirm each child. If children leave the ECC loving to learn and feeling good about what they have accomplished, then we've done our job.

Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students wear uniforms. We encourage PS students to wear comfortable, durable clothing. All children wear tennis shoes for physical education.

We value communication at the Early Childhood Center. Parents are often a teacher's best source of information. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in the educational lives of their children. A great deal of sharing goes on between parents and teachers at the ECC. Listening and giving time to our children is one of the greatest gifts we can give to a child. Parents are encouraged to affirm, accept, and objectively praise their children.
