The Oakridge Lower School is comprised of grades one through four. Since it was founded in 1979, with one classroom at each grade level, the lower school has grown steadily to its current size of 200 students. First and second grades have a maximum of 19 students and 3rd and fourth grades are limited to 20 per section.
The Lower School presents a superior academic and enrichment program to students. In addition to the mastery of basic skills in academic areas, children are encouraged to become problem solvers with critical thinking skills that assist them in being successful as lifelong learners.
As students progress through the years as Lower School students, we strive to help them become responsible and tolerant members of the school community. The student population is diverse and appreciation of differences is encouraged.
The Lower School faculty, in addition to the classroom teachers, includes specialists in art, music, foreign language, computer, physical education, and reading enrichment. The specialists and classroom teachers work closely together to present a truly integrated curriculum between the disciplines. A variety of teaching methods are used with an emphasis on hands on experiences that allow students active involvement in the learning process. Positive reinforcement and high expectations are basics in Lower School.
Students in grades one through four participate in field trips to a variety of museums, concerts, history and science based locations, and other curricular related destinations. Each year in early spring, there is a three-week Living History program that provides students in-depth studies of Native Americans, Mountain Men and the Civil War.
First and second grades are self-contained classrooms with the exception of their enrichment classes. In third and fourth grades, students rotate between the grade level teachers for instruction in social studies, science and math. Math enrichment classes are also available for students in grades 1-4 who require additional math challenges. Math enrichment classes are taught by a middle school teacher from the math department.
Student participation in musical productions, plays, art shows, field days and community service activities helps round out the Lower School curriculum.
There are many opportunities for parent participation in Lower School. Volunteers are welcomed in several areas of the school. Our Parents’ Club addresses the volunteer needs at the school and is very active throughout the year with activities that support the school and its programs.
An extended day program is available to Lower School students. Parents are able to utilize this from 7:15 Am until 6:15 in the evening if they need before or after school care for their children. The extended care program is housed in the Lower School building for students in grades 1-4.
